Mechanical Engineering program educational objectives

The program educational objectives of the Mechanical Engineering Program are defined as statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years of graduation. The program educational objectives directly support the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno and the College of Engineering missions described below.

The Mechanical Engineering Program's educational objectives are that, within a few years of graduation, our alumni will:

  • Successfully practice engineering in roles of increasing responsibility, including effectively contributing to and managing project teams and mentoring colleagues. 
  • Engage in solving engineering problems to improve the economic, social, and environmental well-being of the community while demonstrating professional and ethical responsibility. 
  • Continue lifelong learning by pursuing professional licensure, graduate education or other professional development.

These objectives reinforce the institutional goals insofar as they:

  • Provide for a high-quality degree program
  • Emphasize an undergraduate program which meets the needs of the citizens of ÁùºÏ±¦µä
  • Aid in offering a range of applied, interdisciplinary, and career-oriented programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Contribute to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge that will help improve society at the state, regional and national levels

The program educational objectives of the Mechanical Engineering Program are consistent with and implement the Mechanical Engineering Department, College of Engineering, and University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno goals. The student learning outcomes align with ABET criteria and are listed below.

Mechanical Engineering student learning outcomes

Students will have

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
