Export controls training

Individuals who are engaged in export-controlled activities must receive appropriate training. Violations of export control laws can result in civil and criminal penalties such as the loss of research contracts, monetary fines and/or prison sentences.

Training will generally be completed online through Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). However, the export control officer may supplement or replace online training with in-person training.

Online export controls training through CITI

The CITI Export Compliance course includes several modules. “Export Compliance for Researchers” is the only required module. The other modules are optional, unless specified in the terms of a technology control plan or otherwise assigned by the export control officer.
