Applications and prerequisites

Students applying for admission to the graduate program in pursuit of the M.A. degree in world languages and literatures (specialization: Spanish), in addition to meeting university and graduate school requirements, must possess:

  • A bachelor's degree in Spanish or a Bachelor’s degree in another field and 18 semester credits in upper-division courses in Spanish
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in Spanish courses. GRE scores are not required.

With permission from the instructor, students who do not yet meet these requirements may enroll as graduate special students in graduate courses offered by the department. A maximum of nine credits earned as a graduate special may apply toward fulfilling the M.A. degree requirements if no off-campus credits are being transferred, and also count toward fulfilling the 18-credit prerequisite mentioned above.

International applicants are required to submit official results of the  in their online application. Please check the graduate school website for current minimum TOEFL score requirements, which may differ for students interested in being considered for a graduate assistantship.

How to apply to the M.A. in World Languages program

When you click on the button below and enter your name and email address, you’ll receive an email with a link to the site where you create a password and start your application. From there, use the scroll-down menu and select M.A. World Languages. You’ll be able to save as you go and return to the application any time, until you submit it. You’ll need to upload unofficial transcripts (PDF) of all colleges or universities you’ve attended, upload a statement of purpose (briefly stating your qualifications and why you want to pursue graduate studies in Spanish) and give two references for letters of recommendation.

Graduate assistantships

Graduate assistantship applicants complete the same application and simply check the box indicating interest in being considered for an assistantship.
