  • Violence Prevention Program

To promote a violence-free campus, The Police Department maintains the Violence Prevention Program. Its goal is to provide an integrated and coordinated process for identifying and responding to students, faculty, staff and other individuals who may be at risk of harming themselves or others. The Police Department assesses threat reports with experts in the areas of law enforcement, mental health, student services, human resources and legal counsel to ensure an appropriate response. Other professional members may be consulted as needed.

Preventing violence and supporting the safety of the campus are responsibilities of all members of the University. Campus safety is enhanced through recognizing and identifying concerning behaviors and reporting the information in a timely manner. If you are experiencing or observing an immediate threatening or violent situation, call 911. Everyone is encouraged to report any unusual or threatening behaviors, even if the risk is not perceived as immediately dangerous or imminent.

To report concerns that may not pose immediate threats, you may contact Police Services by email at unrpd@police.unr.edu or by phone at (775) 784-4013. You also have other options when reporting concerns:

    • You can submit a request through the Student Intervention Team, which supports students experiencing life challenges and is focused on guiding students to appropriate campus support services.
    • You can submit tips by texting "UNRTIP" to 50911.
    • You can contact the Reno non-emergency dispatch at (775) 334-2677 or (775) 334-COPS.

As the reporting party, you can expect that someone will contact you about your concern to see if you have any additional information. You may choose to report a tip anonymously; however, there may be fewer options for addressing the situation.

For more information about how the Police Department maintains the Violence Prevention Program, contact Threat Assessment Coordinator Kelli Nidever by email at knidever@unr.edu or by phone at (775) 682-7256.
