Data Science Initiative
A collaborative approach to fostering institutional data science awareness and capacity at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno.
The initiative is supported by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (GM103440).
The Data Science Initiative aims to enhance institutional awareness and capacity through a multifaceted approach. Key elements of the initiative include:
- Transcending departmental silos and promoting cross-collaboration
- Campus-wide assessment to gauge current data science awareness, needs and resources
- Tailored training programs based on assessment results
- Facilitating information exchange and networking opportunity for data-driven research and workforce development
- Building relationships with industry partners to support data science research infrastructure
Campus engagement
To ensure all voices are heard and to avoid duplication, the Data Science Initiative includes representatives from the College of Liberal Arts, College of Engineering, College of Business, and the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno Medical School. Promoting campus-wide engagement, we created a working group, inviting members from additional colleges and divisions to join the discussion and promote the initiative within their areas. We also created a new group email list to keep the campus community involved and updated on developments.

Future Directions
Our collaborative approach aims to create a culture of ethical and informed data science practices, enriching research endeavors and advancing institutional infrastructure for data-driven research. Building on our success from the first year of the initiative, we will continue to foster campus-wide conversations as well as extend programs to statewide INBRE partner institutions and beyond.
