Faculty guide: Understanding and integrating generative AI in teaching

The recent emergence of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as Open AI’s ChatGPT, has many instructors wondering how access to such a tool may affect student work. AI is a vast field encompassing various technologies, and here we are focusing specifically on generative AI—systems capable of producing text, images, and other content from simple prompts.

The Office of Digital Learning has assembled the following information to help instructors better understand what generative AI is, how students might be using it, and how instructors can revise and create assignments to either deter unauthorized use or harness its potential in constructive ways. We also explore how faculty can incorporate AI in course design and strategies to detect unauthorized AI usage.
