MSIS Graduate Assistantship
Who is eligible for a GA Position in the MSIS Program?
You must be accepted to a graduate program at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno, to be eligible for a graduate assistantship. Further, you must continue to be a student in good standing to retain one. Finally, international students must obtain a minimum score on a standardized English test to qualify for a GA position.
Acceptance into the MSIS program does not guarantee an assistantship. There are relatively few assistantships available for the program and they are highly competitive. Graduate assistantship positions are usually filled by the end of June (or the end of December) for the semester starting in August (or January). For example, we usually review applications for GA positions starting May 1 and fill those positions by June of the forthcoming calendar year. See below for the current status.
How to apply
- Be accepted to a graduate program at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno. Students accepted to the MSIS program will have preference over those accepted in other departments.
- Send a copy of your resume via email attachment to the department chair Dr. Amir Talaei-Khoei. CC: a copy to the MSIS Graduate Director, Dr. Dana Edberg.
- In the email, very briefly list the qualifications that you have for the position. We are usually looking for people who can support faculty in their teaching and research responsibilities.
- For teaching, this could mean tutoring students in information systems-related undergraduate classes, grading papers, answering emails and helping prepare new assignments. We are especially interested in graduate assistants who are able to help undergraduate students in programming (C#, Javascript, HTML, Python, SQL).
- For research, this could mean conducting literature reviews, analyzing data using statistical methods, programming, helping write emails to research participants, or summarizing literature. Sometimes we are looking for GA’s who have skills in machine learning or other more advanced analytical methods. Most of the time, we need GA’s who can help support faculty with teaching as listed above.
