Master of Arts in Economics Courses

Master of Arts Course Requirements (Plan A: Non-Thesis Option)

  • Core Courses (6 units):
    • ECON 640 Introduction to Mathematical Economics or ECON 702 - Advanced Microeconomics (3 units)
    • ECON 703 - Advanced Macroeconomics I or ECON781 History of Economic Thought and Theory (3 units)
  • Quantitative Methods (6 units):
    • ECON 741 - Applied Econometrics (3 units)
    • Three additional credits in applied or quantitative methods selected from following
      • ECON742
      • ECON743
      • ECON758
      • IS701
      • Other courses approved by advisor
  • Electives and Tracks (15-21 units). Students will take additional credits in a particular field as approved by advisor. These may include areas such as Data Analytics, Regional Economics, Health Care Economics. Credits must include at least nine credits of economics. 
  • Applied Research (0-6 units). Students may elect to pursue an internship or write a professional paper as part of their course of studies. 
    • ECON 789 Internship
    • ECON 791 Professional Paper
  • A total of at least 33 credits of graduate-level courses, subject to graduate advisor approval.

Note(s):
The Master of Arts Plan A degree does not require a thesis. However, additional course work approved by the students faculty advisory/examining committee must be completed. Each candidate's program of study must be approved by the student's departmental advisor and the College of Business Director of Graduate Studies. Students must also meet all University and college requirements for the master's degree.

Master of Arts Course Requirements (Plan B: Thesis Option)

Specific course requirements for the master of arts in economics include:

  1. ECON 702 (Advanced Microeconomics)
  2. ECON 703 (Advanced Macroeconomics)
  3. ECON 741 (Applied Econometrics)
  4. Nine additional credits taken at the 700-level.
  5. A total of at least 24 credits of graduate-level courses, subject to graduate advisor approval.
  6. Six credits of thesis work.
  7. ECON 794, Seminar, one credit.

The master of arts degree has an optional thesis, with the approval of the graduate advisor.  Each candidate’s program of study must be approved by the student’s departmental advisor and the Director of Graduate Programs. Students must also meet all university and college requirements for the master’s degree.
