Summary

Dr. Cameron Duncan has been teaching at Orvis since 2017, serving as the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program Director and Interim Dean of the Orvis School of Nursing. He also serves as vice president of the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Advanced Practice Nurses Association.

Cameron was born and raised in Reno, ÁùºÏ±¦µä, and was the first in his family to complete a college degree. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno in 2010. He then earned his first Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), specializing in organizational leadership in healthcare organizations in 2012 at Grand Canyon University. In 2014, he completed his second MSN to become a family nurse practitioner and earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, both at the University of Arizona. He later specialized in mental health, completing a post-master’s certificate in 2015, becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, also at the University of Arizona. Cameron was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) in 2022 at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Las Vegas.

Dr. Duncan has a wide variety of experience in nursing and education. He began his nursing career working as a certified nursing assistant in a long-term care facility while attending school. After being accepted into nursing school at Orvis, he was offered an internship opportunity at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Reno as a student nurse. Upon graduation, he continued working at the VA as a medical-surgical nurse. After a few years, he began teaching at Carrington College and later at the University of Arizona as nursing faculty. In 2013, he moved to Palm Springs, California, and began working in an underserved community health clinic as a nurse practitioner. In 2016, he returned to Reno to open an independent, nurse-managed mental health and primary care clinic. In 2017, Cameron joined the Orvis faculty as an assistant professor and was soon asked to lead the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program as director. Dr. Duncan will serve as interim dean of the Orvis School of Nursing and continue to serve as the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program director.

Cameron’s research interests reflect his professional and educational successes. His passion is providing comprehensive healthcare across the lifespan using a holistic approach, treating physical and mental health ailments together. He is also interested in the integration of mental health into primary care settings, advocacy for the nursing profession, healthcare policy, and substance abuse. His most recent study focused on identifying a potential treatment, transcranial magnetic stimulation, for individuals suffering from opioid use disorder, a prevalent condition in ÁùºÏ±¦µä. Additionally, he has authored multiple manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, some co-authored with his students.
