Summary

Dr. Longo is a nurse epidemiologist specializing in environmental health. Her research interests are in delineating health effects in populations exposed to volcanic air pollution and wildfire smoke. As a clinician with over 40 years of experience, she collaborates with frontline healthcare workers and public health to identify adverse effects and test interventions to improve the quality of care to patients and populations. She is a Fellow of the , the founder of the , and the American Nursing Association’s for Hawaii and ÁùºÏ±¦µä. She has been featured on the Science Channel, CNN International, Discovery News Channel, Public Radio and in the Washington Post. Her research was influential in passing to monitor air quality in communities around KÄ«lauea Volcano, Hawai`i. Dr. Longo has assisted PAHO’s Technical Advisory Group for volcanic ashfall and joined the 2018 deployment to KÄ«lauea’s eruption. Most recently, she is a , serves on the for the American Lung Association and is the Editor for , a publication of the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Nurses Association.

Dr. Longo was a tenured Associate Professor from 2006-2017, and a Letter of Appointment teaching faculty from 2018-2022. As emerita faculty, she continues her research and serves on the Orvis Advisory Board.
