We’re glad to see you’re interested in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno!

Here you will find general information on how to apply to the Mathematics or the Statistics and Data Science M.S. and Ph.D. programs, as well as a few tips for putting together a successful application. The Department welcomes applicants from both U.S. institutions and abroad, and strives to provide a supportive atmosphere where students can grow as mathematicians, statisticians and researchers. We’re excited to see you in Reno!

Applying to the program

Applications to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are submitted online through the Graduate School. The Graduate School will process the applications and then they will be provided to the department for the faculty to review. All applicants must meet the University-wide Graduate School admissions requirements in addition to the Department's graduate program admissions requirements.

Departmental admission requirements, Ph.D. programs

  1. Undergraduate/Graduate transcripts from previous institutions (unofficial transcripts uploaded through the application portal are sufficient for admissions decisions, but then official transcripts must be sent to the Graduate School before admission is finalized)
  2. GRE – Recommended but not required for applicants through Spring 2025
  3. Official Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson, or Cambridge English exam scores if your educational history is from a non-English speaking country. For more information, see Graduate admission requirements for interational students.
  4. Three (3) letters of recommendation
  5. Statement of Purpose
  6. Curriculum Vitae

Fall admissions deadline for Ph.D. programs

  • First Deadline: February 1st
  • Second Deadline: March 1st

Spring admissions deadlines for Ph.D. programs

  • First Deadline: October 1st
  • Second Deadline: November 1st

Admissions and funding offers will be made shortly after the first deadline. Applications received between the first and second deadline will be given full consideration, but funding will be contingent upon availability. Applications will not be accepted after the second deadline.
