Geological Sciences and Engineering degree programs
B.S. or minor in Geology
Explore earth-science research areas such as geodynamics, volcanology, geochemistry and petrology, earth and planetary surface processes, earthquakes and seismology, and mineral and energy resources with expert faculty.
B.S. in Geological Engineering
Apply physics, chemistry, meteorology, hydrology, biology, geology and engineering science to understanding the Earth, recognizing and coping with environmental hazards, exploiting natural resources while preserving the environment, and exploring Earth's context in the solar system. Although often equated with geotechnical engineering, a discipline closely aligned with civil engineering, geological engineering is more correctly characterized as a program focused on geologic hazards mitigation and natural resource characterization. In one sense, geological engineering is a form of environmental engineering.
B.S or minor in Geophysics
Armed with an array of cutting-edge technologies and tactics, the geophysics program prides itself on bringing traditional classroom subjects, such as mathematics and physics, into the great outdoors. Hence its motto: "The earth is our laboratory." Geophysics applies mathematical and physical principles to the study of the Earth and planets. The curriculum introduces the global properties of the Earth (gravity, magnetic field, crustal motions, interior dynamics) and the determination of near-surface and interior properties through the use of seismology, electromagnetics, potential fields, remote sensing, geodesy and GPS. Students will gain experience using current, industry-standard computational and GIS tools.
B.S. in Hydrogeology
Students in this hydrogeology program develop basic skills in math, chemistry, and physics, as well as in geology and geological engineering. Students will leave the program with a sound foundation in physical, chemical, geological and quantitative sciences as a basis for understanding the hydrologic cycle and managing water resources. Optional courses are offered for students who plan to continue into graduate studies. Students are required to meet with their advisors for program approval and for review of academic progress at least once each semester.
Accelerated B.S./M.S. Program
The accelerated B.S./M.S. Program encourages outstanding students in the B.S. Geology, B.S. Geological Engineering, B.S. Hydrology and B.S. Geophysics undergraduate degrees to obtain an M.S. degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geophysics in a shorter time at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno. A student can obtain either a Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis) MS degree.
