ÁùºÏ±¦µä Math and Technology Program

The ÁùºÏ±¦µä Math & Technology Program began in 1998 under Program Director Lynda Wiest, a University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno professor who continues to direct the program. The program's purpose is to increase children's knowledge, skills, and confidence in mathematics and technology in order to enhance mathematical and technological competence in personal, academic, and occupational lives. The program consists of a five-day, residential summer camp held on the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno campus and year-round web site information and opportunities.

ÁùºÏ±¦µä kids of all academic abilities and backgrounds may apply to the program in the spring before they will enter grade 7 or 8 the following fall. Approximately 50 kids, 25 from each grade level, are selected randomly from applicants solicited by school mailings to public, private, charter and Native American schools.

50 Campers will be randomly selected For the older camper group, first priority will go to return campers, second to previous applicants who did not attend the camp, and third to new applicants.

Instructional Topics Our camp addresses geometry and spatial skills; problem solving/reasoning; computer and calculator use; data analysis and probability (younger group only); early algebra (older group only).

A Real College Experience Instructional activities take place at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno. Campers stay in campus residence halls and eat meals in the campus cafeteria.

Camp Scholarships Scholarships are available to those with demonstrated financial need upon proof of free or reduced-price school lunch status.

Mission

Our mission is to support and encourage children from varied backgrounds to increase their knowledge, skills, and confidence in mathematics, as well as technology use for mathematics learning. The program provides learning opportunities, resources, and participation in a community of support that better prepares kids to enhance the quality of their academic, vocational, and everyday lives and to contribute to advancement of the wider society.
