Common questions
Incoming degree-seeking first-year undergraduate students and incoming degree-seeking transfer students are eligible to receive an iPad if they are new admits and enrolled full-time.
Faculty may request a device when units are available. Priority will be given to those that are teaching undergraduate students and provide a detailed description outlining the intended use.
Graduate students are not eligible for an iPad at this time.
For any students who may not be eligible to receive a device through DWPI, we supply @One with devices that can be checked out on a semesterly basis. Please contact @One for availability.
All incoming freshman and transfer students will receive their Digital Wolf Pack Initiative equipment just before the start of their first semester at the University. For most students this will be the Fall of their Freshman year.
If you couldn't make it to an iPad distribution event to pick up your iPad, no worries! You can contact dwpi@unr.edu to confirm your eligibility. Once your eligibility is confirmed, you will need to complete the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä Student Technology Agreement on DocuSign (a link will be provided to you) and schedule a time to pick up your iPad.
Students will receive a 11 inch, 128 GB, WiFi enabled Apple iPad Air, an Apple Pencil Pro, and a Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard Case.
DWPI does not provide additional accessories such as a screen protector or Apple Pencil holder.
It is highly recommended that the iPad be utilized in class, and some instructors may have coursework that focuses on certain apps or iPad-specific software. Feel free to discuss options with your individual instructors, should this become an issue.
Students who did not receive an iPad through the DWPI can check out a device from the @One. The devices can be checked out for an entire semester.
The iPad is considered university property until your graduation. Upon your graduation from the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno ownership will transfer to you. If you leave the university for any reason prior to graduation, you are expected to return your iPad or purchase it at its depreciated value. You may not sell or otherwise change ownership of the iPad until device ownership has been transferred to you via graduation or purchase.
If you leave the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno prior to completing your undergraduate degree and are participating in the DWPI, you must purchase or return the entire technology kit upon your departure. This includes the iPad Air, Apple Pencil or Apple Pencil Pro, Smart Keyboard Folio or Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard Case, charging cable and adapter. You can return the equipment by emailing dwpi@unr.edu and scheduling an appointment. You will need to bring your student ID and all the technology with you.
If you have already left the area, you can ship your iPad and accessories to us. Please email dwpi@unr.edu for instructions.
If you withdraw or transfer from University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno prior to completing your undergraduate degree, you have the option to purchase your iPad and all related accessories at its to keep ownership. The process of purchasing your iPad is outlined below.
- Contact DWPI at dwpi@unr.edu to request to pay for the device and accessories. The depreciated amount will be added to your PeopleSoft account.
- After the depreciated amount is added to your PeopleSoft account, contact the Cashier’s Office to pay.
- Send DWPI a receipt or proof of payment.
- DWPI will send you a Transfer of Ownership form.
- After we received the signed Transfer of Ownership form, we will remove the mobile device management system (MDM) and you can continue to use your iPad as you would with any other of your personal devices.

Students who graduate from the University will be able to keep their iPad at no cost. As part of this process, all information on the iPad is erased, so students should ensure that all information on the device they wish to keep is saved elsewhere before the MDM is removed.
Graduates will be sent a link to the transfer of ownership form via DocuSign to initiate the iPad transfer. Once the graduate and the Vice Provost for IT have completed their portion of the form, the completed form will be returned to the student with notification of the date that their iPad will be removed from the mobile device manager (MDM). The MDM will remove all university apps before uninstalling. At this point, the device is owned outright by the graduate.
Students can keep their iPad for one semester outside of the University. Please contact DWPI at (775) 682-9800 to inform that you will return next semester. If you do not enroll in classes for next semester, you will be charged for your iPad and accessories unless you return it.
Students who have applied for a Formal Leave of Absence can keep the devices for up to a year before returning them.

Please check with your college or department to determine any major-specific technology requirements. The university does not require students to purchase or own a laptop. If you withdraw or transfer from the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno, you must either return the iPad and accessories, or purchase the equipment at its depreciated value. For more information on how to return or purchase your device visit the iPad Return and Purchase page.
Your iPad is covered by AppleCare+ coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damage. This provides two repairs per calendar year for the first four years of AppleCare+. You will be required to pay the $49 plus tax for repair of the iPad and the $29 plus tax of the Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard Folio. Visit the AppleCare+ coverage website for further details.
If your iPad, Apple Pencil, or Smart Keyboard Folio physically breaks AppleCare+ repairs can be made through ÁùºÏ±¦µä Wolf Shop located inside the Joe Crowley Student Union. The Wolf Shop phone number is (775) 784-6597. You can also contact AppleCare for Education (800) 800-2775 option 3.
The Apple Pencil is not covered by AppleCare+ if it is lost or stolen.
Please be sure to submit a ticket to the OIT Support Center to make them aware if your iPad is replaced as it may affect your university-supported apps on the iPad.
Please file a report of loss with University Police Services either through the University’s Police Services or by calling (775)-334-2677. Make a note of the police report number and submit a ticket with the OIT Support Center so the iPad can be disabled. You can attempt to find your iPad if you activated the “Find My iPad” feature. The iPad will not be replaced by the University in the case that it is lost or stolen. However, you will not be charged for a lost or stolen iPad.
If your iPad is damaged while out of town, the best option is to wait and take it to the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Wolf Shop when you return to campus. If you are unable to do that you can take it to an Apple store or authorized Apple dealer to have it serviced as part of AppleCare+. Please be sure to submit a ticket to the OIT Support Center to make them aware if your iPad is replaced as it may affect your University-supported apps on the iPad.
To best protect your iPad, you can do the following:
- Turn on the “Find My iPad” feature.
- Set a strong passcode (e.g., not 1234 or 9999).
- Record your serial number in case your iPad gets lost or stolen and you need to provide a report to University Police Services (keep this in a secure place and do not share it with anyone).
- Don't leave your iPad unattended and do not let anyone else use your iPad.
- Put a sticker on your iPad so you can tell your iPad apart from other people's.
You will still be provided an iPad and associated accessories.

Students are not required to have an Apple device to take classes. Further, students are not required to purchase any additional technology, nor are they prohibited from bringing other laptops, tablets, or other forms of technology to campus. We encourage all forms of technology use at UNR, and believe that digital flexibility is key to success in the ever-changing landscape of technology.
Frequently asked technology questions
A core set of apps will come pre-configured on the device, including native iOS apps, Microsoft Office Suite for iPad, Goodnotes, Notability, Canvas, and several UNR apps.
Students may customize their iPad with technology for both learning and personal life. The devices are theirs to customize and use for classes, FaceTime family and friends, or watch their favorite content. UNR encourages students to utilize the iPad for both school work and personal life.
The University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno’s IT group manages the iPads using a software called JAMF. This allows the university to push out certain software to the devices and assist users with security issues like resetting passcodes or disabling devices reported as lost or stolen. This software does not permit OIT to obtain any personal data or other information from the device or the apps installed on the device.

iCloud is not an approved location for data storage or data sharing of confidential and regulated data covered under FERPA or HIPAA at the University. For data not covered under FERPA or HIPAA, iCloud is approved as a location for data storage and sharing. No, if you need access to previously purchased apps, sign in with your Apple ID and download them to the device after setup has been completed. You can transfer files between devices using AirDrop or a USB-C drive.
The University has learned a great deal about new teaching, testing and assessment and student support as our campus has navigated the challenges of the pandemic. This has been a shared experience by everyone in our community. One of the major lessons as we emerge from this period has been that digital literacy and digital accessibility are at the forefront of the future success of our students — not only on their path to graduation, but in becoming the leaders we know they can be in a highly competitive and ever-evolving careers marketplace.
We need to do a better job of providing digital equity and digital literacy. The Digital Wolf Pack Initiative provides an excellent step forward in bridging the digital divide facing many of our students, while also providing us an opportunity to amplify digital learning resources that are already available to all members of our student body. The new initiative will augment digital literacy and enhance student success by providing curriculum and experiences that will benefit our students as they expand their digital skillsets, making them much more marketable as they seek out their new careers.
This initiative represents a new educational approach so that every major and every program at our institution can institute a greater emphasis on digital literacy and fluency. The digital world touches everything in the real world. We believe this is only the beginning of our University offering greater access to digital tools that will help our students throughout their time as scholars on our campus as well as professionals in the marketplace while also strengthening our academic curriculum in its scope and impact. Whether students are freshmen or already advancing through their academic careers at the University, there are resources, tools and instruction available on our campus to help.

The devices will be pre-configured with iOS apps that are designed for University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno students and aimed at helping them achieve a high level of academic success. By providing the technology to all incoming students, University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno is closing the digital divide on campus so that every student will have access to the same technology.
