The LGBTQ studies minor offers coursework from a wide range of academic disciplines, including classes from the departments of anthropology, art, English, history, journalism, music, psychology and more. The minor focuses on exploring the social construction of sexual and gender identities and their relationships to other identities such as race, ethnicity, class, citizenship, disability and more. Students in the minor will learn to look at LGBTQ experiences through multiple lenses, exploring the experiences of individuals from a wide range of communities, both inside and outside of the U.S.
Courses in the minor can be customized to complement your major and fit your interests. All students in the minor take a common foundational course on understanding the intersectional analysis of identities and then select another course offering an introduction to LGBTQ studies. You can choose your remaining courses from a large list of interdisciplinary electives that focus on LGBTQ studies or consider LGBTQ experiences in relation to a broader course of study.
You will learn about the LGBTQ experiences in a variety of settings, including arts and culture, law and justice, health and family, politics and more, that will enrich your understanding in the histories and experiences of LGTBQ+ people across the globe.
The minor is offered by the Department of Gender, Race and Identity in the College of Liberal Arts. The department offers degree programs that explore inequality and social justice to prepare graduates for careers in public advocacy, politics, education and more.
Professors in the Department of Gender, Race and Identity represent a variety of academic disciplines and bring and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research that focuses on better understanding the diverse range of human experiences.
A minor in LGBTQ studies can provide insightful and valuable skillsets applicable to a diverse field of careers. Because the minor in LGBTQ studies focuses on liberal arts courses, you’ll gain experience reading texts and evaluating arguments. You’ll gain critical analysis and communication skills that will be useful in a wide range of career paths, from business to communications to public administration.
With the interdisciplinary coursework, you’ll develop a multidisciplinary viewpoint that can be applicable to your career. A number of professional fields have a need for individuals who are trained to understand the distinct issues facing members of the LGBTQ community, including legal professions such as lawyers and paralegals, counseling and mental health, education, health care professions including doctors and nurses, and journalists who may focus on covering the LGBTQ community. You may also find your LGBTQ minor supports a career in public policy or advocacy.
Through the coursework in in LGBTQ studies, you’ll gain exposure and competency in scholarship related to LGBQT studies. Additionally, the minor in LGBTQ studies offers you the chance to develop a research project, which can help prepare you for further study in a related field in graduate school.
