Our accomplishments

Since its inception, the Bicycle Working Group has worked toward and accomplished a number of goals that have helped to make the University more bike-friendly. These goals were met without any formal funding.

  • Achieving the from 2015-2019 and again in 2019 through 2023, with the goal of achieving BFU Gold in 2023.
  • In an initiative led by the BWG, the League of American Bicyclists selected Reno-Sparks as one of only five cities in the U.S. to host a Bicycle Friendly America 2022 Community Workshop.
  • Installation of an on-campus publicly accessible repair stand for minor bike repairs near the Joe Crowley Student Union.
  • Installation of strategically placed bicycle racks around campus
  • In 2018, the BWG recruited over 60 UNR bike commuters to share how they reached and traveled through campus using the Strava platform. Results of this study helped to identify common travel routes through the community to campus, key campus entry points, and common on-campus travel routes. which helped inform where to place signage on campus for bicyclists and the designation of walk-only zones.
  • Six UNR students helped collect, process, and analyze the data for a class project for GEOG 405/605 - Geographic Information Systems and Science 1. In addition to creating maps and a final report, they helped co-author a paper that was submitted to the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting that was peer-reviewed and accepted for presentation there in January 2019.
