Summary
Areas of emphasis: Drawing, Printmaking, Installation, Mixed Media
My practice revolves around employing an interdisciplinary approach to explore issues of marginalized histories and diasporic existences. Although I was trained as printmaker, it has now become one of the many tools I draw upon to create art. As a topic- based artist, I look for the most effective media to communicate these difficult and complex ideas. To develop my work, the conceptual contents demand a specificity in design and function that promotes a conversation that is accessible to individuals viewing and experiencing the art. While I still feel that craft is an important aspect of creating art, I am not as concerned with perfecting a signature style. It is more important to me to create work that is larger than myself - that is, the narrative, history, or subject becomes the focus, and my ability to manipulate a medium successfully serves only to highlight that information. By working in this manner, I am ensuring that each body of work that I create has its own distinctive story and message to convey.
My work has been exhibited institutionally at The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; The Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; San Francisco; Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Marin, CA; The Drawing Center, New York, NY. Recent gallery exhibits in the Bay Area have included, Nancy Toomey Fine Art, Saint Joseph’s Society for the Arts, Euqinom Gallery, and Idora Park Projects. I have been an Artist-in-Residence at Space Program SF, Recology and the De Young Museum of Fine Arts both in San Francisco, as well as Djerassi in Woodside, California, Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, California, and Bemis Center for the Arts, Omaha, Nebraska.
