The Equity, Diversity, & Language Education strand prepares doctoral students with increased knowledge of equity and diversity issues in the field of education and skills in conducting empirical research.
Students in this program will develop one or two focused areas of scholarship in a major area of equity and diversity in education, such as:
- gender
- global/international/comparative education
- intercultural/multicultural education
- race/ethnicity
- second language acquisition/multilingual education
Jobs that graduates of this program might seek include positions both inside and outside of education, for example, organizational development, human resources, training positions, comparative education, and educational development.

Program Information
Applications at the program level are accepted on an ongoing ("rolling") basis. However, please note that the Graduate School has specific deadlines. If you miss the Graduate School deadline, you may still apply to be a Graduate Special to begin taking coursework for your intended first semester. Materials and criteria for the Equity and Diversity in Education area of emphasis are as follows:
- Undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.00 or higher
- Resume or curriculum vitae
- Statement of Intent that includes a Philosophy of Education
- Three letters of recommendation
- One sample of scholarly writing

This program allows educators and those in related fields to enhance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to work more effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. See the program manual above for program requirements that apply to all doctoral students. For additional program requirements, please contact the program coordinator.
Please see the University tuition and fee rates for information regarding costs and financial aid. Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis through the College of Education, and applications are accepted through February 1 for fall of that year (September 1 for spring semester). Prospective students who indicate their interest in a graduate assistantship will be interviewed for one of multiple positions within the department following their application.
