Artist’s statement
Being a member of a family that is scattered across the country and not bound within a single region, I grew up going on road trips, navigating a myriad of terrains and sceneries. I now realize the profound nature of these journeys is not necessarily witnessing the different natural and manmade forms within the landscape, but rather the physical act of venturing such vast terrain. These may be places where people live their lives or where its only inhabitants are passers-by. The ability to move through space in this manner constructs the illusion that the landscape itself is billowing and transforming, appearing to be alive. As the land undulates, the traveler can enter a unique liminal state of contemplation and solitude. In this inimitable dreamlike state, the traveler is alone to examine themselves outside of their immediate physical or social needs and can begin to understand their relationship to the unfathomably large world they inhabit. The work I create is a response to entering this state, one which takes into consideration what it means to be on one’s own and navigate the complex world that we have constructed.
