ÁùºÏ±¦µä

The ÁùºÏ±¦µä Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (NVCFWRU) exists by cooperative agreement between the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Department of Wildlife (NDOW); the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno (University); the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI); the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS); and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The WMI serves as a liaison among Unit cooperators nation-wide and as an independent voice for the Units on Capitol Hill. Research funds are provided annually by NDOW, and through grants and contracts obtained by Unit scientists and cooperating faculty. Agencies of the U.S. Departments of Interior and Defense are primary sources of federal research funds for the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Unit.

The University, NDOW, and USGS each make substantial financial contributions to the development and continuing operation of the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Unit. This partnership is the key to the success of the Unit: each of the partners bears part of the cost but receives the whole of the benefit. The benefit comes as products; research published in peer-reviewed journals; students trained as entry-level professionals; and technical assistance provided by recognized experts.

• The University annually provides administrative funds for Unit business operations, including the salaries and benefits of the University support staff. The University also provides laboratory and storage space in support of Unit research projects. In recognition of the contributions of NDOW and USGS to this partnership, the University substantially reduces the indirect costs (overhead) charged to Unit grants and contracts.
   
• The NDOW provides funds annually for support of Unit operations and research projects. In addition, NDOW provides funding and in-kind support of graduate students, often as part of its own operations. This arrangement gives agency-based experience to students.
   
• USGS pays the salaries and benefits of the Unit scientists located at the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Unit. In addition, a modest operating fund may be provided annually.
