Each semester the University's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) conducts laboratory safety assessments of the chemistry laboratories in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center. The chemistry department had more than 70 laboratory sections this semester alone.
When conducting assessments, safety specialists review the laboratories using standardized criteria that identifies compliance with waste management, reagent usage, use of personal protective equipment and work practices adhering to departmental and institutional policies. These scores are then weighted based upon the number of students present in the laboratory sections.
The top two teaching assistants are then awarded the distinguished title of Safety Laboratory Teaching Assistant. Congratulations to this semester's recipients, Mona Mehrani and Olakunle Akinola.
