Dear Wolf Pack Family,

To serve our nation is an incredibly selfless act; one that we must always recognize and appreciate. Our University is proud of all Veterans, and I wish to express my sincere gratitude to our students, faculty and staff who have served our country. It is in this spirit that we recognize Veterans Day and honor those who have served so that our nation may remain free.

One of the enduring legacies of our 150-year history as an institution has been that Veterans have always been central to our evolution, growth and ultimate success as a University. Our very first president, LeRoy Brown, originally from Ohio, was a Civil War veteran.

Today at 11:30 a.m., there will be a flag retirement ceremony in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union to retire flags that are no longer fit for duty. This is a sacred, emotionally moving ceremony that I encourage you to attend.

Earlier this week, on Nov. 4, in honor of Veterans Day, our Veterans Services department and the Wolf Pack Vets Club held a flag planting event where 2,500 flags were planted into the lawn of the Gateway Plaza in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union. This event has been held annually on our campus since 2012 and recognizes individuals who served our country and their family members who sacrificed so much during their service.

These ceremonies are part of a larger, intentional effort by our University to recognize the importance of our Veteran population on our campus. Veteran Services provides a wide range of academic, personal and community referral services for students who are Veterans, reservists, National Guard members and their family members. Wolf Pack Vets is a student-led organization within the department that strives to help members succeed academically. I encourage our campus community to learn more about the Veteran Services department and the Veterans’ and Military Center.

Veterans Day is an opportunity for all of us to remember those who have sacrificed for us, and to thank the Veterans and their families who are with us today whose service preserves our freedoms.
