Dear Wolf Pack Family,

Recently, the University learned of a disturbing incident involving a student yelling a derogatory racial term in a shared common space in Argenta Hall. The language used is abhorrent. Any type of racist speech or hateful act is contradictory to our mission and values. Words and actions that are racist and meant to intimidate are not welcome at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno. In this case, the matter is under review by the appropriate University authorities.

Our core purpose is to demonstrate acceptance and support for one another. It is completely unacceptable for something like this to happen. Whenever there are words and acts that hurt, our entire institution suffers, and I apologize to everyone affected by this offensive language.

My office has reached out to Black student leaders and we will be meeting very soon to discuss the impact this incident had at our University. It is of the utmost importance that our University provides an environment for students, faculty and staff where everyone feels supported. I encourage our University community to show respect, understanding and empathy for others.

Just as importantly, we must ask ourselves why this incident happened in the first place. Clearly, this incident shows us that more difficult conversations are needed. In fostering a community of belonging, we must ensure that people know that their voices are heard and their experiences and identities are valued.

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
President
