Dr. Gi W. Yun appointed Dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism
December 19, 2023
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
It is my pleasure to announce Dr. Gi W. Yun’s appointment to Dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism, effective January 1, 2024. Dr. Yun joined the Reynolds School in 2016 as associate professor. He was promoted to full professor in 2020 and has served as the Vail M. Pittman Associate Dean since 2021. Dr. Yun’s appointment comes following a national search. He succeeds Dr. Al Stavitsky, who has served as dean since 2012.
Dr. Yun also served as director of the Center for Advanced Media Studies since beginning his tenure at the University and has greatly advanced the research reputation of the Reynolds School through his mentorship of undergraduate and graduate student research activities and research support for faculty. His own work focuses on the social psychological theories of communication such as machine bias in information production and consumption, local media agenda-setting on immigration stories and other areas of study. He received a Google Research Award in 2018 for his project on the lack of representation of minority-owned businesses on Google Maps in northern ÁùºÏ±¦µä.
I join our entire University in thanking Dr. Stavitsky, known affectionately across campus as “Dean Al,” for the historic leadership he has provided the Reynold School as the school reached record levels of student and faculty achievement and diversity, earning the school national renown. Dean Al, who was the school’s longest-tenured dean, will be returning to the faculty and plans on continuing his research on the history of ÁùºÏ±¦µä broadcasting.
Dr. Yun received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and his journalism and mass communication undergraduate degree from Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea.
Dr. Yun’s appointment to dean is welcomed by his colleagues, collaborators and friends at the Reynolds School and across the University. He brings to the position a passion for all things media and an innovative vision for the future of the school. Congratulations, Dr. Yun. Our entire University looks forward to witnessing the evolution of the Reynolds School of Journalism under Dr. Yun’s leadership.
Go Pack!
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
