Veteran's Day
November 9, 2023
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
We observe Veterans Day each year at this time of November to honor the sacrifices that countless individuals throughout our history have made in military service to our nation. We honor the men and women of our military who have selflessly chosen to serve ÁùºÏ±¦µä and our nation throughout times of conflict as well as in times of peace. At the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno, we welcome and are extremely proud of our veterans, as well as those who are currently or will be part of military service in the future. Veterans Day is a time for all of us to honor and to offer our deep appreciation to those who serve today and to those who have served in the past, in preserving our freedom.
The University is committed to the success of the more than 1,000 military-connected students we have on our campus, as well as faculty and staff members who have served our country. The University is working to ensure that our student veterans achieve their educational goals and reach the next chapter of their professional lives through a variety of ways. The dedicated faculty and staff of our Veteran Services Department annually processes thousands of G.I. Bill® benefits, and offers a wide range of academic and social programs to allow student veterans, currently serving either on active duty or in the Reserve or National Guard, as well as family members, to connect on shared experiences. The department also provides services for veterans in college readiness and employment as well as support for qualified dependents.
Today (Nov. 9) at noon, the Veterans Service Department will hold a flag retirement ceremony in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union to retire flags that are no longer fit for duty in a dignified and proper manner.
Following the ceremony, at approximately 12:15 p.m., the department will hold an unveiling event on the first floor of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex to celebrate the addition of Purple Heart and disabled veteran parking spots on campus. The spots, which are located on the first floor of the Whalen Complex and the fourth floor of the Gateway Parking Complex, are reserved for veterans who have earned the Purple Heart medal and disabled veterans.
On Veterans Day we honor those who have chosen to serve. And every day at our University, we thank them for being such an important part of who we are as a campus community.
Battle Born!
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
