Dear Wolf Pack Family,

I hope this message finds you well as we prepare for the start of the spring semester. Soon students will move back into our residential communities and spring semester instruction will begin. This is an exciting time, one that as we approach the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday offers us an opportunity to think about our involvement in our community and our role in the world around us.

Dr. King’s life was one of service, to his family, to his church, to his community, and to our nation. Thanks to his courageous social activism and ability to inspire through a life dedicated to the betterment of humanity, our nation saw ratification of the 24th amendment as well as the passage of the Civil Rights Act. His wife, the late Coretta Scott King, once said of Dr. King, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”

On Monday we can honor Dr. King’s memory by volunteering and becoming involved in a number of ways throughout our community.

The Center for Student Engagement will be partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows for a . The Center for Student Engagement and University volunteers will help the Boys and Girls Club team lead art activities to create marching signs, participate in a march around the Boys and Girls Club facility and will also read the children a story about Dr. King and have a discussion afterward regarding why Dr. King’s birthday is such an important date to commemorate. If you are interested in volunteering, sign up on . The Boys and Girls Club is located at 1090 Bresson Avenue.

Dr. King’s work continues through the service we provide to others. We honor Dr. King’s memory by volunteering, by becoming involved in the life of our community and by embracing his vision for our country to further justice and equality in all that we do.

This is The Wolf Pack Way.

Go Pack!

Sincere regards,
