July 1, 2022
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
I am happy to announce that Dr. Erick Jones, senior science advisor in the Office of the Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department and former professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been named dean of the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno College of Engineering.
Dr. Jones is an internationally recognized researcher in industrial manufacturing and systems engineering. His career over the past 25 years has spanned industry, government and academia.
Dr. Jones begins his appointment on Sept. 1. He succeeds Manos Maragakis, who earlier this year announced he was stepping down as Dean of the College of Engineering after 13 years. Starting on July 1, Indira Chatterjee, Associate Dean of Engineering will serve as acting Dean until Sept. 1.
Dr. Jones is a dynamic leader who understands how to seize moments of opportunity in order to further an agenda of excellence. The possibilities seem endless of what we will be capable of accomplishing under Dr. Jones’ leadership in the coming years — in attracting our brightest minds both among our students and among our faculty, and in creating discovery and knowledge in the service of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, our society and in the furthering of social progress.
Dr. Jones clearly understands the current landscape for what it means to be a Carnegie R1 ‘Very High Research’ institution. He very clearly understands how we can amplify every aspect of our College of Engineering, so that we can continue to build transcendent programs for engineering education and research.
Dr. Jones worked in industry for more than a decade before returning to academia to attain his Ph.D. at the University of Houston. He held engineering, management, and executive management positions while in industry, including Engineering Supervisor, Director of Engineering, and Executive Manager for companies such as UPS, Academy Sports and Outdoors, Arthur Andersen, and LLP, respectively.
Dr. Jones earned his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1993, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Houston in 1996 and 2003, respectively.
Please help me in welcoming Dr. Jones to the Wolf Pack Family.
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
