Sanford Center for Aging is celebrating three decades of supporting ÁùºÏ±¦µä’s elders while inspiring future generations to serve older adults. Join the celebration, and the first 30th-anniversary event this year.

The Open House will feature food, drinks, door prizes and an opportunity to meet the Sanford Center for Aging team and learn about the many direct services provided to the community. View the website for more information about the event and visit here for directions to the Center for Molecular Medicine. This event is open to the public and free to attend.

The Sanford Center began with Carson City pioneers, Jean and Graham Sanford, and their ownership of the Dangberg Land and Livestock Company in the Carson Valley. While caring for her aging mother, Mrs. Sanford envisioned a better future for older adults in ÁùºÏ±¦µä. Upon her death, Mrs. Sanford designated a portion of her estate to be used to establish a program at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä for “research, teaching and publicizing ways and means to improve quality of life for elders.” In 1993, the NSHE Board of Regents officially named that program the Sanford Center for Aging.

Today, 30 years later, the Sanford Center for Aging continues Mrs. Sanford’s vision of aging-related education, translational research and community outreach through a variety of community-based supports and services, community and professional education programs, gerontology coursework for students at UNR and research activities to contribute to the growing knowledge in the field of aging.

Today, the Sanford Center includes nearly 40 faculty, staff and students, along with almost 250 volunteers in supporting ÁùºÏ±¦µä’s elders, working to fulfill Mrs. Sanford’s vision from 30 years ago.
