Dean Al Stavitsky shares faculty and student successes from the past semester.

Celebrating its centennial, the Reynolds School of Journalism marked its 100th year of journalism education at ÁùºÏ±¦µä with another semester full of remarkable accomplishments by students and faculty. Reynolds School Dean Al Stavitsky highlighted those triumphs from the fall 2022 semester in a “Semester in Review” video.

Hello, friends. Dean Al Stavitsky here with the Reynolds School semester in review for fall 2022. The first journalism class at the university was offered in the fall of 1922. So, this semester we marked 100 years of journalism education at ÁùºÏ±¦µä.

We launched our centennial year by sending a delegation of students and faculty to the joint conference of the national associations of Black journalists and Hispanic journalists in Las Vegas.

Then we welcomed a stellar–and large–class of new freshmen and transfer students to J-FIT, our pre-semester academic-success boot camp.

A century is a big deal, so we threw ourselves a big party. The centerpiece of our celebration was the premiere screening of a documentary film, produced by Professor Kari Barber and a team of students and faculty. The film will be shown on PBS Reno on February 21st.

To coincide with the centennial, a Reynolds School Alumni Association chapter was formed. Alumni from the ‘70s through the 2020s got together for the inaugural mixer.

Speaking of our wonderful alumni, Abbi Whitaker was honored as the Reynolds School’s Distinguished Alumna at Homecoming.

And the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Broadcasters Association inducted this guy into the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Broadcasters Hall of Fame. [Camera click sounds]

UC Berkeley author and scholar Beth Piatote came to campus as our annual Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writer.

And the 8th annual RSJ Documentary Film Festival showcased five exceptional student films. [Cheering]

We concluded the semester by graduating an outstanding class of undergraduate and master’s students, the first graduates of our second century.

Who knows what we’ll accomplish next semester? Wishing you all the best for the new year.
