Mentor says Sydney Fields’ work represents highest standard of undergraduate student research.

Chemical & Materials Engineering (CME) student Sydney Fields has received the 2023 $2,500 Structural Materials Division (SMD) Scholarship from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Foundation. The TMS Foundation helps nurture the future of the minerals, metals and materials fields by supporting scholarships and student programs.

“I am incredibly honored to be a recipient of this award,” Fields said. “I am thoroughly enjoying working in the materials science and engineering field, and it is inspiring to be selected as the recipient. I am very grateful for my mentor and lab mates who have encouraged me.”

Fields has been a member of TMS since 2021, and is mentored by CME Assistant Professor Yufeng Zheng. She is in Zheng’s research group via the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Undergraduate Research Award.

“Sydney is a model student in our materials science and engineering program and she has been excellent in her academics, research and service,” Zheng said. “Sydney’s work has represented the highest standard of our undergraduate students’ research.”

Fields also received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive research (EPSCoR) Research Infrastructure Improvement (RII) Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program award for her proposal to study the influence of post heat-treatment on the 3D printed titanium alloys for aerospace applications that will help her to continue her research in Spring 2023.
