Public radio station on campus recognized for bilingual pandemic coverage, hard news and sports reporting

ÁùºÏ±¦µä desert at sunset.

was recognized last week with three regional Murrow awards in the small market radio division: excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion, hard news and sports reporting. Reynolds School of Journalism students and alumnae contributed to all three award-winning projects.

The award in the Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category recognized bilingual pandemic coverage produced by KUNR, , the Reynolds School’s bilingual news outlet, and . Contributors included journalism students Andrew Mendez and Lesly Virgen-Mariscal and journalism alumnae Stephanie Serrano and Natalie Van Hoozer. Journalism alumna Tatiana Ramirez provided event support.

Jenny Manrique served as a bilingual translator and editor. KUNR’s Crystal Willis served as digital editor. KUNR’s News Director Michelle Billman and Reynolds School faculty member Claudia Cruz served as managing editors.

KUNR was also awarded two additional regional Murrow awards in the Hard News category for “” by KUNR’s Paul Boger and journalism alumna Lucia Starbuck and in the Sports Reporting category for “” by Serrano.

The Murrow Awards are selected by the (RTDNA). They honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism, awarding news stations, networks, syndication services, program services and digital news organizations. The awards are named for the legendary broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow.

These professional award-winning entries are now eligible for the national Murrow competition. In 2019, KUNR earned a for excellence in innovation in the small market radio category for its English/Spanish bilingual programming, produced in collaboration with Noticiero Móvil.
