Everyone gains when women vote

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Carolyn Warner: The 19th amendment is important because it gave women of the United States the right to vote in federal elections.

It recognized women as citizens with their own political views, and their own political interests. The suffrage movement was important because it mobilized women into participating in politics. It mobilized women into social movements. They became engaged, what we would call "engaged civically," to try to promote things like child welfare services, better hospitals, organizing welfare leagues, improving education.

It resulted in women getting the right to vote in a number of states across the United States, and the 19th amendment recognized women of this country as having a voice in American politics. It's important to vote in order to express our interests and what we want our governments to do to improve our lives and the lives of those around us.
