Celebrate the unparalleled geology of ÁùºÏ±¦µä all year long with a photo calendar from the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Bureau of Mines and Geology. the 2021 calendar is now available
This 12-month calendar (January through December 2021) is full of beautiful photos highlighting ÁùºÏ±¦µä’s scenic wonders and features a different geologic topic each month: snow covered, Volcanic Hills, spheroidal weathering, Pine Forest Range, Monte Cristo Range, Diana’s Punch Bowl, Lake Mead, Buffalo Valley Volcanic Field, Lamoille Canyon, Gold Butte, Nightingale Mountains, and fossil fumarole pipes.
Interesting facts about ÁùºÏ±¦µä and the geology of the state are included in the calendar.
In addition to showing holidays and lunar cycles like most calendars, sprinkled throughout the Geology calendar are interesting milestones, such as:
- the day John C. Fremont discovered Pyramid Lake (Jan. 10, 1844),
2. the 1934 Excelsior Mountains magnitude 6.1 earthquake (Jan. 30),
3. last year’s Monte Cristo Range magnitude 6.5 earthquake (May 20),
4. the discovery of silver ore in Pony Canyon, Austin (May 2, 1862),
5. and in 1984 the first federally permitted geothermal plant in ÁùºÏ±¦µä at Desert Peak in Churchill County (Oct. 9).
Calendars can also be purchased at The Flag Store in Sparks, Sundance Books and Music in downtown Reno and at the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Wolf Shop in the Joe Crowley Student Union on campus.
Orders of 10 or more calendars are discounted to $10 each and, upon request, come with a ÁùºÏ±¦µä-shaped pin created from ÁùºÏ±¦µä rocks and minerals made and generously donated by Jon Price, ÁùºÏ±¦µä State Geologist Emeritus.
The photos featured in the calendar were chosen through the Bureau's annual photo contest.
This year's contest winners are:
- First-place: Bob Tregilus, Wheeler Peak, elevation 13,063 feet (3,982 meters), Snake Range, Great Basin National Park, White Pine County (January main photo)
- Second-place: Garrett Wake, Aerial photograph of the Gold Butte National Monument, Clark County (October photo)
- Third-place: Brian Swick, Diana’s Punch Bowl lies along a north-trending, concealed fault in Monitor Valley, Nye County (June photo)
Photo Contest for 2021
If you have amazing photos of ÁùºÏ±¦µä geology that you would like to share with others in the 2021 ÁùºÏ±¦µä Geology Calendar, you can enter the photo contest now. The photo contest for the 2021 calendar is already in progress.
Deadline for entries is May 31, 2021. Photos need to be taken in ÁùºÏ±¦µä. A location description and/or GPS coordinates should accompany submissions along with description. High-quality, high-resolution photo files of at least 300 DPI are required for quality printing. You may enter as many photos as you wish. Email submissions to Christina Clack (cclack@unr.edu). NBMG cartographers will make the final decision on the winning photos. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second-, and third-place winners.
