Each year, the University's “Super Readers are Superheroes” literacy program along with supporters and their dogs participate in the Run for Education to benefit the Education Alliance of Washoe County. More than 8,500 people attended the event at the Outlets at Legends and Sparks Marina Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019. Seven literacy program members, three supporters, and four dogs from the literacy program participated dressed up as superheroes to promote their program with the slogan “Super Readers are Superheroes.”
This literacy program is generously funded through the Regent’s Service Program, as well as receiving aid from the College of Liberal Arts, Criminal Justice Department, Interdisciplinary Social Psychology PhD Program, and School of Social Research and Justice Studies. The “Super Readers are Superheroes” program works with Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows to improve literacy among at-risk youth at their clubs, and has helped over 500 students gain confidence and reading skills over the past five years.
