Marc Johnson, University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno president and Corey Pompey, director of athletic bands, accepted the check on behalf of the University and the band from Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union’s executive management team, Wally Murray, chief executive officer and president, and Dean Altus, chief operating officer and executive vice president.
This $41,350 check combines an initial $20,000 sponsorship and $21,350 in matching gifts and funds raised through Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union branches and Wolf Pack home game booths, which will be allocated towards scholarships for band members.
“Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union places a big emphasis on helping to improve the community,” Corey Pompey, director of athletic bands, said. “We are grateful to them for including us in those efforts. Running a sizable band program such as this requires a large investment of resources. Their assistance helps us to continue our mission of supporting the University in its various endeavors while ensuring that the students have a positive experience.”
Since the partnership began in 2012, more than $300,000 has been raised to provide uniforms, instruments, travel and scholarships from the “It’s Time to Support the Band” dollar-for-dollar partnership between Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union and the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä Wolf Pack Marching Band.
The University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno has seen its marching band grow in numbers, support and pride. Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union continually supports the band, which is comprised of 172 members who study 40 different majors, in many ways throughout the year. During the first week of band practices of this past summer, Greater ÁùºÏ±¦µä Credit Union surprised each student member of the band with a drawstring bag and water canister.
“GNCU has been so wonderful to us, so we try to support them in various community initiatives when we can,” Pompey said.
