The University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno School of the Arts begins an exciting year of building with construction of the University Arts Building, which started in June. Guest and student artists will fill the fall 2017 season with more than 40 events.
A few of the month's highlights include Third Coast Percussion and Ravi Coltrane. The Performing Art Series will be hosting Third Coast Percussion in Nightingale Concert Hall Thursday, Sept. 28. The quartet explores and expands the extraordinary possibilities of the percussion repertoire. This group has become known for its groundbreaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines.
Coltrane, a world-renowned jazz saxophonist, joins University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno's faculty jazz ensemble, The Collective, for a fundraising concert. It will benefit the University's Program in Jazz & Improvisational Music Tuesday, Sept. 26.

Making a Museum

Sheppard Contemporary, Church Fine Arts
University Galleries welcomes visitors to observe museum staff preparing the museum collection to move into a new facility. Part of Sheppard Contemporary has been transformed into a working lab where the inner workings of the museum will be shared with the community. Questions are welcome, and frequent visits will yield opportunities to observe many objects never before seen in the museum.

Austin Pratt Returns: LACED & The Prints of E.M. Washington

University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno graduate Austin Pratt returns to Reno with a solo exhibition as part of University Galleries' exhibition series that investigates the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno Department of Art Permanent Collection. Austin Pratt, Walter McNamara, Lynda Yuroff, and Joan Arrizabalaga will offer exhibitions of new work inspired by and including objects they have chosen from the permanent collection.

Apex Concerts: Vers l'éternité

Apex Concerts, formerly the Argenta Concert Series, opens its seventh season with "Vers l'éternité" - a program tracing its path from the works of French romantics, through Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc, and culminating at the apex of French chamber music: the eternal "Quartet for the End of Time" by Olivier Messiaen. A true monument to human spirit and resilience in the face of agonizing adversities of World War II, this work will be performed, among others by the violin virtuoso Benjamin Beilman, the enchantress of the clarinet, Romie de Guise-Langlois, as well as distinguished University faculty members. Artist lecture by kate-hers RHEE. RHEE was born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in the racially segregated suburbs of Detroit. She received her B.F.A.from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her M.F.A. from the University of California - Irvine, where she was a Graduate Studies Diversity and Jacob K. Javits Fellow. Artist and Art Center Pasadena professor Tom Knechtel says of RHEE's interdisciplinary practice, "Whether she is trying to re-insert herself back into her birth society of Korea or jamming the culinary tropes of German society with Korean cooking, revealing the underlying racism behind a much-beloved German treat, or mining the double entendres in an image of two pug dogs, she directly addresses the complexity of social and racial identities in ways that are funny and scathing, all at once."

Formed in 2005 by David Skidmore, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin and Sean Connors, Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary possibilities of the percussion repertoire. This group has become known for its groundbreaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines, including residency projects with engineers at the University of Notre Dame and architects at Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. This vibrant group has earned an international reputation for their concerns and recordings containing inspiring energy and subtle nuance.
