Nineteen new majors, minors, doctorate degrees and certificate programs have been added to the more than 160 degree programs available to students at the University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno. The new programs include a dance major, Ph.D. in mathematics, cinema and media studies minor and more. Below are some highlighted programs for students.
Dance Major
The School of the Arts has added a dance major, where students will be able to take part in advanced practice of dance training, along with learning cultural and historical aspects of dance.
"I am very eager and enthusiastic to see this new major come on board," Scronce said. "It has been a long, hard road to get this program up and running. The dance faculty, instructors and staff have shown great perseverance and dedication that is now paying off in exciting ways."
Cinema and Media Studies Minor
The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts is adding a cinema and media studies minor, which introduces students to new ways of analyzing film. Students have the possibility to study a variety of genres, directors and history of film.
ÁùºÏ±¦µäTeach Majors
ÁùºÏ±¦µäTeach is adding three new dual degree programs to their list. Students can earn a bachelor of science in atmospheric sciences or geography in the College of Science, a bachelor of science in environmental science though the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, and pair any of the three with a bachelor of science in secondary education in the College of Education. Students who want to teach can earn two degrees in four years, with a degree in their content major as well as a degree in secondary education.
ÁùºÏ±¦µäTeach Program Coordinator Roxanne Piskel hopes that the new majors will meet the demand of students and faculty.
"We have students who are in a STEM major, not necessarily covered by a ÁùºÏ±¦µäTeach program who also want to major in education," Piskel said. "Many students are also listening to recommendations from faculty who are with the Washoe County School District providing input on what they're looking for in future teachers."
Ph.D. in Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the College of Science is adding a Ph.D. in mathematics. Students have the option to study either pure mathematics or applied mathematics, and will develop and apply numerical methods to multidisciplinary collaborative projects in engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology economics and other areas.
The University's list of academic programs is continually growing, offering students more opportunities to discover their career goals.
