Retired investigative reporter Les Zaitz took over a struggling weekly paper in Eastern Oregon and led the news team to challenge the state government for records and won. The Reynolds School of Journalism is awarding The Malheur Enterprise the prestigious Frank McCulloch Award for its work in defending access to public information. Publisher and editor Les Zaitz will be in Reno accepting the award on behalf of the Enterprise staff. He'll drop by the Reno Gazette-Journal newsroom for a discussion about how newsrooms can produce impactful and in-depth investigative pieces.
The event will be a Q&A format moderated by Anjeanette Damon, RGJ's city investigative reporter. Damon's work recently made the finals for the Knight Award for Public Service in the national Online Journalism Awards.
All members of the press and interested community members are invited, but space is limited so register early.
The event will commence at noon and a light lunch will be served.
