An Xiao Mina, an artist, author, and technologist from California, is presenting at the Reynolds School of Journalism at 4 p.m., March 13, as part of the Center for Media Studies speaker series. Following her talk, the Online News Association is hosting a mixer with Mina at 6 p.m. at the Reno Collective.
Mina is responsible for the team behind , where they work on translating social media and verifying news in real time. She's also the co-founder of , where she focuses on researching civic technology. Meedan also works with outlets such as , and National Geographic's .
In a , Mina writes that "new strategies of attention have shaped many of the (often divisive) outcomes of recent referenda and elections across multiple continents, and they will continue to be a driving force in 2017 and beyond." She cited the specific use of memes and attention-seeking niche websites use to get people's interaction on social media.
"Our work in 2017 will require creative efforts," she writes. "New experiments, new tools, new ways of telling stories and new ways of sharing."
Mina will discuss building new technologies and platforms to reach new audiences.
