Event seeks dynamic local and national speakers with a big idea worth sharing

TEDxUniversityofÁùºÏ±¦µä has announced its fourth annual event will be Saturday, January 23, 2016, and the call for speakers is now open. Local speakers interested in participating in the event are encouraged to share their big idea for consideration.

New this year, TEDxUniversityofÁùºÏ±¦µä has moved the program from a Friday to a Saturday with the intention of allowing more people to attend and to accommodate a more diverse audience. Also new, is a change of venue for the event, which will be held at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

"For the past three years, this event has sold out in a matter of minutes," Bret Simmons, College of Business associate professor and TEDxUniversityofÁùºÏ±¦µä organizer, said. "Our goal this year is to bring the University out into the community and offer those interested the opportunity to share in a day-long meaningful TEDx experience."  

As for the types of speakers the event is looking for this year, Simmons said event organizers are hoping to again raise the bar.  

"We are looking for dynamic local speakers passionate about their ideas," Simmons said. "Our goal is to find people with perspectives the global TED community needs to hear. We're determined to present high-caliber local and University speakers year-after-year."  

Local speakers like , , and all shared their big ideas worth spreading during the January 2015 event. The University of ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Reno also showcased student speaker , and three faculty members; , and .  

"The University is committed to finding stories, ideas and performances among its own students, faculty and alumni," Simmons said. "We are also looking for people interested in performing at the event. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design. We try to make sure to incorporate each of these elements into our full day of speakers."

The call for speakers can be found at and is open from now until 20 speakers are selected. People interested in applying are encouraged to do so early. The event's programming committee is hoping to have the majority of the speaker line-up completed by August.   The title sponsor of TEDxUniversityofÁùºÏ±¦µä is the University's College of Business Online Executive MBA program. Tickets for the event will go on sale Monday, Oct. 5.
