The School of the Arts is the epicenter of the University’s booming performing and visual arts scene and is comprised of the Departments of art, music, and theatre and dance. Programs, events and course offerings enrich the cultural life on campus and throughout the region. Faculty members are driven to support students on their academic journey and help them refine their artistic potential. Through courses, public performances and exhibitions, the School of the Arts is increasing our community’s access to world-class artists and arts experiences.

  • Departments: 15 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across the disciplines of visual art, music, theatre and dance provide students with the opportunity to refine their creative practice while gaining skills necessary to thrive as an artist.
  • Events: The departments of art, music, and theatre and dance produce exceptional performances and visual art exhibitions year-round that feature students, faculty, and internationally recognized artists.
  • Signature programs: Longstanding programs include Apex Concerts, the Performing Arts Series, Reno Jazz Festival and Lake Tahoe Music Camp.
  • Places and spaces: The John and Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art, galleries and the award winning Black Rock Press present opportunities to view world-class visual artists as well as student and faculty artworks. Performance venues include the Harlan O. and Barbara R. Hall Recital Hall, Nightingale Concert Hall, Redfield Proscenium Theatre and the Redfield Studio theatre.
  • History: The School of the Arts goes back as early as 1892 when classical art and history professor, James E. Church taught college courses.
