Curiosity wins at the College of Science

The annual competition selected the top three videos, along with two honorable mentions and a most-engaged watch party to win prizes.

The College of Science held its annual video competition with an added watch party engagement challenge for students. The videos are two minutes or less in length and the competition is open to all students in the College of Science. This year’s themes were:

  • Life a life of discovery
  • The science of everyday life
  • Making science simple: the importance of science communication
  • Breaking barriers: diversity in STEM
  • Science saves the world

Prizes were awarded to each of the top three videos. The first place video won $400, the second place video won $300 and the third place video won $200. Two honorable mentions each won $100. The most engaged watch party won a $100 gift card. Students were encouraged to watch the videos virtually in COVID-safe groups.

First place: Pursue Your Curiosity!

The winners of this year's video competition are all members of the College of Science Living Learning Community. They include chemistry undergraduate Dylan Friend, neuroscience undergraduates Brian Guthrie and Jake Tack, and Divij Kodi, a biology undergraduate. In their video, a curious student finds a new way to answer his questions.

Second place: Food Science!

Science is an inherent part of our lives. Biology undergraduate WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) student Delaney Lewis dives into how the bread we eat rises and some of the mechanisms of how we eat.

Third place: The Powers of a Human

A creative video by two WiSE students, mechanical engineering undergraduate Tiffany Noda and biology undergraduate Julie Cruz-Valle, shows the range of ways scientists use their skills.

Honorable Mention: Curiosity in Your Daily Life

Biology WiSE student Kalia Johnson recites a poem about the relationship between curiosity and science.

Honorable Mention: The Power of Discovery

Om Patel, a microbiology & immunology undergraduate, explores the wide-ranging topics available to students in the College of Science.

Watch party competition

Students submitted photos of their virtual watch party to be shared on the College’s Instagram, with the most liked photo winning the competition. Lexi Young (and her cat) received the most likes on her photo.

Congratulations to all our winners! The annual competition will continue next year. Visit the video competition website for more information and to see past competition winners.
