Helping meet the educational needs of children who have dual sensory impairments.

Who is eligible for services?

Individuals who are eligible are those, birth through 21 years of age, diagnosed as having impairments in both vision and hearing or suspected of having such impairments. Individuals may function as if they have such impairments when they respond inconsistently or inconclusively during clinical evaluations and/or to visual & auditory stimuli in their environment(s).

Who may request technical assistance?

  • Families of infants, toddlers, children, and youth with dual sensory impairments. Parents with a child identified by NDSIP may request Technical Assistance by completing the parent TA form. Go to Parent Technical Assistance Request.
  • Agency and school district personnel providing services to individuals, birth through 21 years of age, with dual sensory impairments. Service Providers with a child identified by NDSIP may request Technical Assistance by completing the service provider TA form. Go to Service Provider Technical Assistance Request.

What services are provided?

  • Assistance in identification of individuals, ages birth through 21 years, who have dual sensory impairments.
  • Provision of on-site technical assistance (e.g., consultants, in-service workshops, program review) to families, educational and agency personnel, and care providers of infants, toddlers, children, and youth with dual sensory impairments. Topics may include communication skills, behavior support, instructional strategies, transition, and other topics requested.
  • Maintenance of a lending library of books, guides, manuals, and videos related to individuals with dual sensory impairments. Topics include inclusion, assessment, communication skills, understanding visual and hearing difficulties, and numerous other topics.
