The Chinese minor offered through the World Languages and Literatures Department within the College of Liberal Arts provides you with cultural enrichment and a broad understanding of Chinese language, culture and economy.
In this program, you'll study the Chinese language, including courses in conversation and grammar. Conversation classes focus on everyday topics that are relatable to American students in the target language as well as accurate pronunciation and culturally appropriate behavior. You will have the opportunity to be exposed to authentic materials from Chinese TV dramas and movies, as well as other popular media platforms to be immersed in real-life situations.
In addition to taking up to three years of Chinese language classes, concurrently you will also take classes that explore Chinese society and overseas Chinese communities through Chinese classic, modern and popular culture to become informed learners and cultivate an enduring understanding of intercultural communication and competence.
The World Languages and Literatures Department in the College of Liberal Arts offers courses and programs in a range of languages from around the globe and provides a number of opportunities for students, including guest speakers, language clubs, and contests and scholarships.
With more than one billion speakers around the globe, Chinese is a language of literature, commerce, diplomacy and technology. Knowledge of the Chinese language can prepare you for careers in any of these fields, providing not only linguistic competency but also necessary cultural knowledge to work effectively with individuals from different countries.
Knowledge of Chinese can also prepare you for careers that require foreign language proficiency, including translation and interpretation, the foreign service, or work in governmental or international organizations.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 24 percent job growth for interpreters and translators between 2020 and 2030, which is much faster than average. This growth is largely driven by globalization and an increasingly diverse U.S. population, according to the BLS.
Foreign language skills can also give you an advantage in almost industry, including media, health care and social services, and education, as knowledge of Chinese can help you reach more people and provide services to a wider clientele.
