The bachelor's degree in biology provides up-to-date training in the biological sciences, including fields of concentration in ecology and evolution as well as molecular and cellular biology.
Students in the biology major take courses in related areas of science, such as chemistry and physics, as well as biology courses and electives that allow you to focus on topics that interest you. Students also have the opportunity to participate in faculty-guided biology research.
Students who successfully complete the program are prepared to compete nationally for admission to graduate programs in the life and health sciences, medical and dental school, and entrance into civil service and industrial positions. Requirements for admission to most medical schools can be met by completion of the biology major without the need for additional courses.
The opportunity to work with faculty on research projects is a fundamental part of our biology degree program. We offer students the ability to work in our labs—and potentially earn course credit—studying everything from water conservation to fruit fly genetics or chickadee cognition.
Whether your undergraduate research is the foundation for further research in graduate school or just an opportunity to work with our faculty outside the classroom, hands-on experience in biology research plays a key role in your undergraduate experience in the biology program.
A biology minor offers students in other majors the opportunity to add a well-rounded understanding of biology to their major.
The cell and molecular biology emphasis includes courses in genetics and cell biology, on top of your general biology education.
An emphasis in ecology and evolutionary biology allows you to round out your biology major with courses that focus on population biology, evolution and ecological theory.
Our ÁùºÏ±¦µäTeach program in secondary education and biology allows you to earn both a bachelor's degree in biology and a degree in secondary education, preparing you for a career in biology as well as a career teaching biology at the high-school level.
Biology is a broad degree program that prepares you for a wide range of careers. Biology majors can go on to careers in teaching, health care or industry, and a biology degree also prepares you for further study in graduate school or the health sciences. Although some careers in the life sciences require a master's degree or higher, graduates with a bachelor's degree in biology have the skills necessary for a range of career paths.
